Protein structure and function remain core themes in general biochemistry because cellular activity depends on the precise folding, stability, interaction, and regulation of proteins. From enzymes and transport proteins to receptors and structural molecules, protein behavior is shaped by amino acid composition, secondary and tertiary structure, post-translational modification, molecular environment, and interactions with ligands, substrates, cofactors, or inhibitors.
Current biochemical research increasingly connects classical protein chemistry with molecular biology, structural biology, computational modeling, and disease-related mechanisms. Techniques such as chromatography, electrophoresis, mass spectrometry, X-ray crystallography, nuclear magnetic resonance, and cryo-electron microscopy have expanded the ability to characterize protein structure and function at multiple levels. However, translating structural observations into functional interpretation requires careful synthesis of biochemical, biophysical, and cellular evidence.
A well-structured review article should therefore move beyond listing individual studies. It should organize evidence around central biochemical questions, such as how protein conformation affects activity, how mutations influence molecular stability, how enzyme regulation controls metabolic pathways, and how altered biochemical processes contribute to disease. This approach allows readers to understand both established mechanisms and unresolved research gaps in general biochemistry.
